Tinubu Nominates New INEC Commissioners Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated new officials to serve in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The nominations, announced on October 16, 2026, include four National Commissioner nominees and two Resident Electoral Commissioner nominees. The President has also reappointed Dr Bala Bila as the National Commissioner representing the North-East geopolitical zone.

According to the presidency, the nominations are intended to fill vacancies created by the expiration of the tenures of some serving officials. The nominees will be screened by the Senate before their appointments can be confirmed. (State House, Abuja)

Meet the New INEC Commissioner Nominees

Among those nominated is Professor Mustapha Aliu, who is expected to replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru as the National Commissioner representing the North-West.

Bashir Muhammed Umar has also been nominated to replace Professor Muhammad Adamu as the National Commissioner representing the North-Central zone.

For the South-West, Tinubu nominated Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, who currently serves as the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State. She is expected to replace Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure expires on October 24, 2026.

The two nominees for Resident Electoral Commissioner positions are Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye, a retired permanent secretary nominated to represent Ekiti State, and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi from Jigawa State, who is expected to replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura. (State House, Abuja)

Senate Screening Still Ahead

The nominees will have to undergo Senate scrutiny and receive confirmation before their appointments are finalised.

Tinubu has urged the Senate to expedite the process, citing the forthcoming general elections.

INEC plays a central role in organising Nigeria’s elections, including voter registration, election logistics, accreditation procedures and the announcement of official results.

Filling vacancies within the commission is therefore an important part of preparing its leadership and administration for the next electoral cycle.

What This Means for the 2027 Elections

With the 2027 general elections approaching, attention is increasingly turning to the institutions responsible for conducting the polls.

The nomination of new commissioners does not, by itself, indicate how the elections will turn out. However, the Senate’s screening process and the commission’s preparations will be important developments to watch in the months ahead.

Nigerians will be looking for a credible electoral process, transparent administration and confidence that votes will be properly counted.

The nominees’ confirmation and subsequent work within INEC will be among the developments to follow as preparations continue.

Final Thoughts

President Tinubu’s latest nominations are part of efforts to fill vacancies within Nigeria’s electoral commission ahead of the 2027 elections.

The appointments are not yet final, as the nominees must first pass through Senate screening and confirmation.

As the election period draws closer, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how INEC prepares to deliver the next general elections.
