Elon Musk Flying Car: Tesla Unveils the New Roadster

Elon Musk has unveiled Tesla’s futuristic flying Roadster, showcasing technology that allows the electric supercar to leave the ground. Here’s what we know about the Tesla flying car, its features, and expected release

Elon Musk Flying Car: Tesla Unveils the New Roadster

Elon Musk has once again caught the world’s attention after Tesla unveiled its long-awaited next-generation Roadster, a futuristic electric supercar capable of briefly leaving the ground using technology developed with SpaceX.

The new Roadster was demonstrated at SpaceX’s testing facility in Texas on October 15. During the event, the vehicle climbed an inverted ramp, launched into the air, rotated mid-air and landed back on its wheels. Tesla also demonstrated the Roadster jumping over several vehicles.

Is Elon Musk’s Flying Car Really a Flying Car?

Not exactly in the traditional sense.

The Tesla Roadster isn’t designed to fly between cities like an airplane. Instead, special cold-gas thrusters and a suction system allow certain versions of the vehicle to perform short airborne maneuvers.

Tesla says technology borrowed from SpaceX helps make these extreme movements possible.

0–60 MPH in Less Than One Second

The flying demonstration wasn’t the only surprise.

Tesla showed the Roadster accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in less than one second, with one demonstration recording approximately 0.81 seconds. If such performance carries over to production vehicles, it would put the Roadster in extraordinary territory for a road-going car.

When Will the Tesla Flying Car Be Released?

Don’t expect to see the Roadster everywhere just yet.

Musk says Tesla plans to begin production in 2028. The company is already accepting reservations, although availability, regulations and exactly which capabilities customers will legally be allowed to use remain important questions.

The most extreme Rocket version, which features the full flight system demonstrated at the event, is expected to be invitation-only and isn’t intended for normal public-road use.

Is This the Future of Cars?

Tesla’s new Roadster certainly looks like something straight out of a science-fiction movie.

Whether cars capable of these kinds of airborne maneuvers eventually become common remains to be seen. Safety regulations, cost and road laws could all determine how much of this technology reaches everyday drivers.

For now, however, Elon Musk and Tesla have managed to get people talking about flying cars again.
